About Therapy

Doing your best still feels like too much.

That’s not a personal failure. It’s the reality of living with profound change, chronic stress, or emotional pain that doesn’t “go away.”

You may be grieving; adjusting to life with illness or disability; facing the emotional toll of caregiving; or struggling with the quiet, slow unraveling that sometimes accompanies aging. You’re showing up, but it’s heavy, lonely, and exhausting.

Therapy with me isn’t about pretending things are fine. It’s about having a place where you can say the things you don’t always feel safe saying – where your pain, losses, frustration, and fears are met with care instead of judgment.

Therapy helps you navigate life’s challenges.

In our work together, you’ll have space to process what’s happening and receive support to navigate it more effectively. Some days, our work together might mean talking through your grief. Other days, it might be about setting boundaries with family, managing medical overwhelm, or simply finding a small moment of peace in a life that no longer feels familiar. We’ll take it one step at a time, honoring your pace and values.

There’s no pressure here to be “better” in a certain number of sessions. Instead, we’ll focus on helping you feel more grounded, more in control, and more like yourself, even if life around you is still hard.

Clients often tell me that therapy with me feels warm, thoughtful, and profoundly validating. I ask good questions, listen closely, and bring gentleness and honesty to our conversations. Over time, you may notice that you’re not just surviving. Now, you are adapting, making clearer choices, and feeling more like a participant in your life again.

Whether you’re just starting to seek help or you’ve been down this road before, you are welcome here. Therapy can offer relief that doesn’t come from fixing everything – but from no longer facing it alone.

About Cathy Swift Nagel, LCSW

Caring for others is my passion.

I became a therapist because I believe in the quiet power of witnessing the dignity of telling the truth and being met with care.

Before private practice, I spent years working in healthcare and aging services, which deepened my understanding of how illness and loss touch every part of a person’s life.

My work is grounded in the idea that healing often happens in relationships where we feel understood, respected, and not so alone. In particular, I provide psychotherapy for older and disabled adults navigating change, loss, and life’s hard edges.

I work with clients navigating grief, depression, anxiety, chronic illness, disability, identity shifts, and the emotional impact of aging.

Training and experience guide my approach.

In 1998, I received my Master of Social Work (MSW) from California State University, Long Beach, and I’ve been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in California since 2001.

My approach is strengths-based. I blend cognitive reframing, mindfulness, and practical coping tools with deep respect for your life experiences.

I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy – I believe in showing up for the person in front of me.

When I’m not in session…

…you can find me spending time with friends and family, teaching for the School of Social Work at SF State, watercolor painting, fostering dogs or cats, tending to my (often overambitious) stack of books, or baking something that makes the whole house smell like chocolate.

I value connection, humor, and quiet strength – and those qualities tend to show up in my work, too.

If anything you’ve read here resonates, I’d love to hear from you.
